It was used as a long-distance express train on the LNER and by its successors, British Railways Eastern and North-Eastern Regions, most notably the 10am London to Edinburgh Flying Scotsman service from which the locomotive got its name. When it was completed in1923 it initially had the number 1472 and was a flagship locomotive for the LNER. It represented the company during the British Empire exhibition at Wembley in 1924 & 1925. It was at this time it acquired the new number 4472 Flying scotsman. It was one of five locomotives used on the prestigious non stop flying Scotsman train service between London and Edinburgh.
